Rachel Yuchu Lai
Hi! My name is Rachel, and I am one of the founders of the BTA Club. For me, drama is how I embrace the world and myself. It is the tentacle that I reach out with, and it transforms me every minute of my life as it breathes in the diversity I see and breathes out the person I become. I cannot live without drama anymore. I initiated this club because I wish to bring this powerful effect to everyone, equipping every drama student with the ability to utilize drama on a psychological and societal level.
My Story with the Broadway Theatre Arts Club
When the idea of a student-led theatre club first struck me in ninth grade, I envisioned many things for it — a community built upon drama, competitions & collaborations, stage designs, playwriting, and many other aspects. Today everything came together in an unexplainable unity.
Being the leader of many student-written, directed, and performed production, I witnessed how an idea transformed into reality. It grew from mere words to countless pages of script; it created characters with complex personalities from names; it emerged from a plain stage to a scene with props, lighting, and music designs. I cannot use sentences to fully describe how this process worked because it was layers and layers of hard work and passion from every single club member.
Each time, when we bowed to the audience, hands joined, I saw how that initial vision had come true for me. We had allowed the world to see ourselves, our ideas, and our perspectives.
